Hi from Selby, North Yorkshire

Postby Liam @ TheSelebian » Mon Apr 10, 2017 2:20 pm

Hi, I'm Liam.

I edit the local news and information site for Selby, TheSelebian (selebian.com)

The site started life as a college project back in 2000. Back then, under the original name of Selby Online, the site was little more than a tourism website and forum attached.

A few direction changes over the years and we've finally settled on providing timely local news and information in an area where the now-monopoly local paper is still focused on print.

Our area has always had a strong tradition of pluralism in journalism. Until recently Selby boasted two weekly paid-for paper titles, two freebies plus a dedicated edition of the local regional daily from York. Sadly though in 2017 the local news competition is essentially us plus the one remaining weekly. The regional daily chips in once in a while on their website too.

As others have left the market we are trying to better position the site to take advantage of the gap in news provision. We are far slower at this that we would like, however - (the same time constraints that seem to plague other hyperlocals).

Currently looking for new ways to reach our target audience... There's a mobile app in development (in-house, using Apache Cordova) and we are intending to refresh our site layout and content offer over the course of 2017.

Hi Liam,

Thanks for joining the hyperlocal forum.

We're looking into the username issue and hope to have it resolved very soon.

In the meantime, we hope you continue to use and enjoy the forum.
